Hey guys, it’s Mary
Usually, this blog is in french. But today I want to make this very special post in english because I want all my american friends to be able to read me carefully.
Among all the things that I am, I am a college student at the University of Law in France. As a college student, I know that eating right might sometimes be a real challenge. But for the past 3 years, I have been working really hard on my diet, and my workout plan to make everything healthy.
After I graduated High School, I went to live for one entire year in Idaho. I went to High School there as an exchange student. For one year, I experimented american food and I loved it. I even started to believe that peanut butter was one of the healthiest food I could ever eat.
3 days ago, I came back from one month in the USA, 3 years after my exchange student experience. One month of road tripping, adventuring throughout the country, one month of beautiful landscapes, amazingly nice and kind people. It’s a country that I love with all my heart. It’s my foster country.
However, during this month, I realized how hard it is to actually eat healthy there. And it was kind of a bummer because everything is beyond great there, except for the food. If I’m being honest, it is quite a catastrophe.
Here’s a little disclaimer : I am not a nutritionist. I have read lots of articles, information, I have taught myself a lot of things but I don’t know everything. Also, I don’t mean to compare the USA with France. I just want to tell you what eating healthy actually mean.
I’ll make it very easy for you to understand my point. During my one month road trip, of course, we stopped at fast foods. We have them too in France. It’s ok to eat fast food once in a while. But we tried to eat healthy most of the time, and it was really hard. We decided to buy the basics as we would in France : bread, ham (turkey or chicken), chips, tomatoes, bananas, peaches.
Only bananas (very expensive!!), and chips would actually taste like what they are supposed too ! Tomatoes didn’t really taste like anything. And here is what the other tasted like : sugar ! It’s obvious that the food is full of SUGAR! The bread, the ham, we couldn’t even stand to look at it after a few days; we were actually disgusted ! (The peaches tasted like apples by the way. )
SO, the problem isn’t really that it tastes like sugar. Chocolate tastes like sugar and it’s completely fine. The problem is these things are supposed to fill you up so you stop being hungry and they’re not supposed to taste like sugar . But what sugar does is that it makes you an addict to it. And there you are, wanting more of it ! (Also too much sugar is clearly bad for you !! so the fact that you want more is bad !! )
What I’ve learned thanks to my interest in the USA is that most of the food that is recommended as « healthy » actually isn’t.
The list is long but here is a few examples : peanut butter, nutella, bread, protein bar, doritos, cheetos, any kind of breakfast cereals (especially those that are multicolored !!), sausages, hot dog meat, beef jerky, corn, corn syrup, maple syrup, pancakes (although these are actually good!), and the list goes on …
Overall, I think grocery shopping at the famous W store isn’t such a good idea…
I hope you find this article helpful! I don’t mean to point a finger..but kinda. I’ve attended High School in the USA and I know what kids eat at lunch and what the school give them. Kids have no idea what to eat and I believe they are not given the best examples at school …. I get that sometimes it’s also a question of cost. But ask yourself that : what does your health cost ?!
I surely hope you find it helpful to read the point of view of someone who isn’t american but knows the culture (at least a little bit) and comes from a country where eating right is the culture.
To finish this post, I want to know if you want me to make you a list of real healthy foods that you can easily find in the USA for a reasonable cost..Tell me in the comments !
